I recently had the opportunity to spend a beautiful day with a dear friend and we spent our time strolling through beautiful plush green gardens, enjoying a delightful lunch, and then culminating the afternoon by sitting under a tree and talking. We both have a lot going on in our lives and this precious time together was not only long overdue, but it was also an answer to an unspoken prayer. I was forced to relax and put the cares of the world on hold for just a bit while I took in the beauty of God’s creation. During our time together my friend and I shared what was going on in our lives as well as where we hope to go next. One of the memorable statements she shared with me was, when you get off your knees (in prayer) roll of your sleeves (and get to work). When I heard this, it reminded me of something my grandmother would say when I was a girl, pray as if it depends on God and work as if it depends on you.
The last couple of years have been somewhat of a blur. We have experienced several different seasons in such a short period of time. There have been highs and lows like never before and sometimes we did not know what the next day would bring. When life throws us such curve balls it is important for us to quiet ourselves, be still and get on our knees. Once we receive instructions and guidance then we must put what we learn into action by rolling up our sleeves and getting to work. What is interesting is most of the time what is revealed to us we already knew, but for some reason we get stuck. Clarity is such a gift. It is also interesting how the harder and smarter we work, the more successful we tend to be.
If we are open, God will guide our footsteps, but it is up to us to do the work. The key is we must really want something bad enough to not settle for mediocrity in our lives. Success takes work. I have been told things easily attained are lightly esteemed. When you get off your knees and roll up your sleeves there is nothing you and God cannot accomplish together. Hard work not only pays off but also builds character. Hard work is not only good for your financial health, but also for your soul. It makes you feel good about yourself. Our soul feels at peace when we earn something through our own efforts. So many have fallen into the dangerous mindset of expecting recognition and rewards without putting in the work. Having a microwave mentality, expecting instant everything including satisfaction and success has a short shelf life. So many are given rewards without putting in real work and this causes confusion. Do not get confused, hard work takes discipline and discipline will help you put in the work you need to fulfill your purpose.
When you are feeling down and not sure which way to turn, look up, because God is always with us in good and bad times, and he knows exactly what we need and when we need it. Clarity will come our way when we get on our knees, quiet our spirit, listen, then get up and roll up our sleeves and get to work. If you are still a little stumped and need a little help, do not be afraid to reach out to someone and let them know. After all, we are not alone on this journey called life.
